The Raven

Poe attended the University of Virginia (1826), but was expelled for not paying his gambling debts. The Raven Society at the University of Virginia was founded in 1904.

The Raven – NOVA MSMIT 2008 Graduation

Respectfully adapted by Barb Wixom

Your relationship with the MSMIT program will be around forever to support you. This below poem may reflect an experience you have years from now…

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of fascinating IT lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, similar to Bud Johnson during class happenings,
I heard a gentle rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis that darn Wixom,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
one more eval to complete, and nothing more.'

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished for a taste of Mod 1 intensity; - vainly I had sought to borrow
From Stefano's books of technical propensity - sorrow for late Darden nights no more -
For the times we got together and modeled objects, use cases no more -
we all knew that the future is Wi-Max! - for evermore.

And the UVA cheers of loud school spirit, of each wahoowa
thrilled me – though Mr. Kemp's honor rants filled me with terrors never felt before;
But, filled with honor I stood repeating, I love that Jefferson – without him there'd be no drinking behind the Biltmore door -
I knew there'd be special times ahead – like unions for Mona, Zack, and Sean; kids for Johnny and Carl; job changes for Mona and Raman; and much, much more,

Deep into MSMIT memories peering, long I stood there wondering about IT projects, fearing,
Doubting, project teams ever dared to look back before
But Mod 2 post-mortems showed us, IT folks are lawless, few, like Ryan Nelson's hair, are flawless,
And in the past companies have been forced for IT projects to, `Pay more!'
Yes, without our help companies must, `Pay more!'
But after Mod 2, that will be no more.

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
As I thought back to Mod 3 with EOGs Szpindor, Anderson, and Holland a mentoring, strongly I implore;
There was some fine singing, while peers watched a drinking,
"Bat out of Hell" Allen karaoked, "Chain Gang" Siegl crooned, "Material Girl" Ruby warbled while we watched on the Baja Bean floor,
There was even rumored rapping, as we witnessed from the Baja Bean floor
I suggest we all keep our day jobs, but nothing more.

Back in Bechtel for Mod 4 learning, all my soul within me burning,
to finish the last module like others had done before.
`Surely,' said I, `surely I can make it through these days, even with Maillet stirring up a craze;
Let me analyze those management companies, spice makers, telcos, data providers, hotels and service providers, however poor -
Most IT folks from other programs never grasp the business concepts I explore; -
I'll now be their boss and nothing more!

Of course, there was more to that Module 4, would remind the Canadian Peter, Eh?

There was finance, accounting, social networking, marketing, leadership, strategy and other mysteries we did explore;

At times there was no stopping, those "good questions" from popping, popping out of student mouths, as professors were unable to reply with more;
Luckily, we can celebrate Jay's Olympian who competes to earn high scores.

And we demanded bacon and eggs until the end, that is for sure.

And then 'twas over – Erika's distinctive laughter, Rouss Hall novelty, Seigl podcasts, Silhooettes serenading, bowling on Kegler's shiny floors,

Hearing stories from Denmark, where only the strong will survive as Nelson cracks the whip and walks students until they are sore.

This class with biz cases done are enthused, Gary and Bill – please create an OLAP cube.
The class now clasps a cherished diploma with letters MS that come before -
We clasp a rare and precious degree that makes us very brave and sure'
Earning it means stress nevermore! And success evermore!

Alejandro Fernandez at The Patriot Center

Waiting for the concert to beginLast night I took Barbie to a concert to thank her for supporting me while I completed my Master's degree. The day before was the final day of my defense of my thesis which was presented to the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. One of Barbie's favorite musicians is a Mexican singer named Alejandro Fernandez, and as luck would have it he was performing near our place the day after I completed my degree. These are a few pictures from the show.

Mission Complete

Wah Hoo Wah
Wah Hoo Wah! As of this morning I have completed my Masters of Science in the Management of Information Technology. As of today I hold this degree from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. However, UVA tradition is to only hold their walking the lawn ceremony once a year. So, I won't be able to participate in that event until next May.
