House Finch Hatchling Lift-Off

Today was the day we have been waiting for…the house finch hatchlings left their nest.  Barbie took this picture when checking on them, and just seconds after it was captured, the nest exodus began.

As one would expect, these guys didn't take to flight right away.  Their initial mode of transportation was their legs and feet which made them easy to follow even though they went in different directions.  The one below found his way to our front door where he sat for a few minutes.

Another of the hatchlings wandered into a corner where our fence met the side of the house. Once in that corner it got stuck trying to get past the fence, so Barbie got some gloves to help it out.  We were both quite surprised to see that it stayed in her hands quite readily and didn't seem to be fearful of her and her gesture.

Even when she put her hands down on the ground to let the hatchling go, it stayed on her palm for a while.

Eventually, she got her new friend to step off her hand by placing it near another of the hatchlings already on the ground.

House Finch Hatchlings Hair?

The house finch hatchlings continue to grow.  Today's picture shows how full their feathers are getting.  I think it's funny how they still have hair on the sides of their heads like a caricature of a crotchety old man.

Coming Up Roses

Based on the rest of the plants around our house, I was a little worried about the roses that we planted last summer.  However, today we finally saw some buds beginning to open.  Woo hoo!

House Finches Growing

The house finch hatchlings are continuing to grow, and at this rate they look like they will be too big to fit in the nest soon.

House Finch Hatchling Feathers

The house finch nest is starting to look really crowded.  All three hatchlings are still growing rapidly, and all of them now have long feathers growing on their wings.

House Finch Nest Builder

For the last week or so, we have been posting updates on the progress of some house finch hatchlings.  Although we have seen the mother house finch, we haven't been able to get a picture of her until today.  I am curious to know if the hatchlings will have the same color as their mother.

House Finch Hatchling Beaks

Wow!  In less than a week, the house finch hatchlings are starting to get feathers and hard beaks.  You can see both in today's picture.

Corporate Counter Culture?

My office, like many others, is trying to make "health" part of it's culture.  This is being done on many levels, some overt and others are extremely subtle.  However, as with many cultural movements there are counter-culture movements that also develop.  Below is a picture I took of a message that an office mate put on their white board.  Too funny!

House Finch Hatchling Progress

Following yesterday's drama of hatchlings being thrown from the nest and subsequently rescued by some passing humans, we weren't sure what to expect today.  Thankfully when we checked on them, we saw that all three were still in the nest and are still growing rapidly.

House Finch Drama

Today was a particularly drama filled day for the House Finch hatchlings that we found in our yard.  As a matter of fact, a near-death experience was had by two of them!  Something startled the mother bird while she was in the nest and when she flew away, she knocked 2 of the hatchlings out onto the ground.

Thankfully we were there when it happened, and we quickly got a couple of plastic cups to scoop the hatchlings up and put them back in the nest.

House Finch Hatchlings

A few weeks ago we discovered a house finch nest in our yard with 4 eggs in it.  Today we found that same nest now has 3 hatchlings in it (and one unhatched egg).

Our Dogs Like Mango

Barbie often enjoys letting our dogs taste fruits and veggies that she prepares for herself to see if they like them.  Of course, she makes sure to perform some due diligence first to make sure that the food is puppy-safe.  Tonight that trend continued as she decided to give Maddie and Mosby their first taste of mango and they absolutely loved it!
