Red, White and Bram

After his climbing victory, we took Jorge to see a movie.  This was a big deal for him since he is 12 years-old and we were going to see a PG-13 movie (White House Down).

The movie was good, and we all ate popcorn and candy so it was a fun night.  However, Jorge did not know that the movie was a distraction as next door to the parking garage for the theatre was an Independence Day celebration called "Red, White and Bram" which was sponsored by the Brambleton Home Owners Association.

This celebration is the first of a few we will be taking Jorge to where they will have arial fireworks displays, so for him it was quite a surprise to walk out of the movie theatre towards the car and see everyone looking up at the sky.

He was so exited to tell everyone back in Tucson what he was seeing that he tried to capture exactly what he saw by putting his video camera just below is eye while he recorded the fireworks.

Jorge Climbs A Mountain

Today we took Jorge to a community event honoring area First Responders.  The day was pretty fun with lots of people in attendance, radio controlled airplanes, plenty of food, and a rock climbing wall.

Jorge was eager to try to climb the wall, but it was clear that he wasn't sure how to do it.  His first attempt was slow and meticulous, and he only made it about 12 feet up the 35 foot structure before he climbed down.

His second attempt was made after he watched a young girl climb up who showed him how to find the best holds on the way up.  During his second attempt that girl, named Madison, also helped cheer him up to the top where he was able to hit a victory button the sounded a siren.  However, Jorge wash't confident enough to repel back down using the harness he was wearing.  Instead he climbed down with a huge grin on his face the whole way.

For his third attempt, Jorge was ready to race to the top and repel back down.  He was so confident that he asked me to record it for him.  You can watch it below as well:

Just Keep Swimming...

Jorge has taken to swimming better that we expected.   He has only been to a couple of classes so far, and he is already loving it (as you can tell by the smile on his face below).

Jorge Starts Swimming Lessons

While Jorge is here we are going to try an expose him to quite a few experiences that he may not get a chance to experience at home.  Today is the first of those experiences with swimming lessons.

Checking In With Parents Has Changed

When I was a young boy I traveled every summer to spend time with extended family.  I absolutely loved that and I am so grateful for everyone that I was able to visit and spend time with.

One of the rituals that came with each trip I made was calling home to check in.  My memory of those calls was that they didn't last very long, but it was always comforting to hear my dad's voice as I told him what I was up to.

Well, modern technology has certainly changed that process.  Instead of calling home so that Jorge could talk to his mom, he Skype's with her.  The general conversations that he has via Skype are pretty similar to what I had on the phone, but there is some added comfort of being able to see his mom and know that she can see him.

Here you can see him showing his mom and little brother some new Pokemon cards that he got at the store.

And here you can see his view.

Jorge is in the House

Our 12-year-old nephew, Jorge arrived today form Arizona.  He had to get up really early for his flight, and once we landed we had to make the obligatory stops at a few stores for things he didn't have or forgot to pack.

Even with all of that activity, once we got to our house and gave him the tour he couldn't wait to go out to the back yard and jump into our hammock.

Despite the fact that he said he had never even heard of a hammock before, he had no difficulty at all getting on it.  And, after letting the breeze sway him for a few minutes, he had no difficulty at all getting off of it.

Washington From the Potomac

While attending conference in Washington, I took the opportunity to take a ride on a sightseeing boat that runs on the Potomac River.  The weather was beautiful and the sun was setting when I felt inspired to check out the city from a perspective I've never seen before.

The boat itself was not that big, but it had a nice sized observation deck that looked more than large enough to do some sight seeing from.

Sights like the Kennedy Center were gorgeous as dusk fell on us.

Of the 50 or so people that were on the boat with me, I think I was the only one that was interested in the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge as we went under it.  I think I have driven over this bridge hundreds of times, but this was the first time I have seen it from this angle so it was worth taking a picture.

Our Deck Is Complete

We have been doing things to our deck for a while now.  Adding a grille, multiple fruit bearing plants, and even a few pieces of furniture with storage.  However, our latest addition is the single most influential addition to date.

We have been looking for a new table for a few months and we finally found one this past weekend, and with it our deck feels like a whole new room that we can use in our house.
